Sunny, smoke-free skies with warm conditions this weekend – San Francisco Chronicle

Sunny weather and clear, smoke-free skies settled into the Bay Area on Saturday morning.

That meant that instead of two reasons — smoke and virus protection — to wear masks over their faces, Bay Area residents could go back to wearing their masks for only one reason.

In San Francisco, morning clouds were making way for the sun, with highs in the 70s expected and west winds up to 20 mph keeping the wildfire smoke from accumulating. Warmer parts of the east and south bay will reach the 80s.

On Sunday, temperatures will rise a bit, and Concord, Walnut Creek, Gilroy and the Napa Valley could hit the low 90s.

Air quality was listed as “good” throughout the entire Bay Area. The Bay Area Air Quality District posted a map of the region on Saturday morning that was entirely green — the good color — instead of the orange, red and purple mosaic of last week that kept people indoors with air purifiers humming.

But district forecaster Charley Knoderer said the “nice cold front” that was keeping the skies clear could include northerly winds that would push smoke from Northern California fires into the north and East Bay later on Saturday and on Sunday.

For that reason, the district declared a Spare the Air alert for Saturday, with wood burning forbidden and non-essential driving discouraged.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Garcia said the Bay Area could look forward to “very pleasant, fall-like conditions” for the next several days.

“The winds out of the north could pull the August Complex fire smoke into the North Bay but they won’t be strong enough to move the smoke farther south,” he said.

The clear sunny weather was due to a weak high pressure system blowing in from the ocean, Garcia said.

As for rain, there won’t be any for at least 10 days to two weeks.
