So many people flooded Beaumont Health’s electronic myBeaumontChart system Friday morning, the website crashed, spokesman Bob Ortlieb told the Free Press.

It went down about 9:15 a.m. among a crush of patients logging on to the patient portal to sign up for COVID-19 vaccination. He said the health system’s IT department is working to restore connectivity but did not have an update for when the system should be up and running again.

“We’re encouraged by the overwhelming response to Beaumont’s recent announcement of its plans to offer area residents ages 65 and older COVID-19 vaccinations,” the Southfield-based hospital system said in a statement. “Our IT team is aware of connectivity issues with myBeaumontChart, and they are working diligently to address them.

“In the meantime, we appreciate people’s patience and will be posting frequent updates at beaumont.org/covid-vaccine. Please note, appointments to get a COVID vaccine are required. Beaumont is not accepting walk-ins for either scheduling or vaccinations.  Additionally, because of the overwhelming demand, we currently do not have the capacity to handle phone inquiries, which is why we’re asking people to use our website for the most up-to-date information.”

Beaumont and several other hospitals in southeastern Michigan announced late Thursday that they would vaccinate their patients ages 65 and older, with appointments for immunizations coming up starting Monday.

Those who want to schedule a vaccine trough Beaumont must follow these steps:

  • Create a myBeaumontChart account or log-in to your existing account
  • Confirm your current email address is listed on your account.
  • Then, look for a message in your personal email from oneChartAMB.oneChartAMB@beaumont.org. It will arrive as soon as you are eligible to schedule your vaccination.
  • When you receive the email, open the message and click the link to schedule your vaccination.

If you do not have an active personal myBeaumontChart account, the health system urges people to create a free personal account at myBeaumontChart.com.

With such huge demand for the vaccines and scarce resources, Dr. Jeffrey S. Fischgrund, a spine surgeon and chief of clinical services for Beaumont Health’s eight hospitals, said Beaumont can’t manage a phone line.

“We cannot set up a call line for people to call in for questions,” Fischgrund said. “The best we can do now is through electronic medical records. And as we move on, we’re going to have to figure out how do we get to those people that are just not technologically advanced enough to make that work.”

He asked people to be patient and understand that this process will take time.

“The vaccine is not the end of the pandemic,” Fischgrund said. “We still have to wear masks; we still have the social distance.

“If you’re offered the vaccine, please take the vaccines, and I want to be blunt with people when they question it. I tell them you have two options: You can either get the vaccine, or you can get COVID. And that’s really what it comes down to.”
