Chinese State Media Declares U.S. ‘Most Failed Country of 2020’ – Newsweek

A prominent Chinese tabloid has concluded that the United States was the “most failed country of 2020.”

The Global Times, an English-language tabloid published by the Chinese Communist Party, took aim at the U.S., its political upheaval and bungled response to the COVID-19 pandemic in a Wednesday editorial. The article was titled, “While China fights virus, U.S. indulges in power struggle,” referencing President Donald Trump’s unconstitutional efforts to remain in power despite losing the election.

“The U.S.’ political focus is always far away from the public’s urgent needs,” the editorial said.

“If U.S. politics were to serve the people, the two parties should have put aside all disputes and created the best conditions for fighting the epidemic. But what it first echoes is the struggle for power,” the article continued. It went on to call Trump’s response to the pandemic “a total failure,” while criticizing American leaders for focusing on the election and impeachment instead of the COVID-19 crisis.

“If it [the U.S.] were in a socialist country, a large number of officials would have been sent to court with so many deaths. It is not a question of how good or bad they had performed in this fight, but the extent to which they should be investigated in crimes of negligence,” the editorial said.

“The U.S. is the most failed country of 2020. As Confucius said, ‘To know the things of shame is to be near fortitude.'”

The U.S. continues to have the highest number of infections and deaths from COVID-19 of any country in the world. As of Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. had reported close to 23 million infections since the start of the pandemic, and well over 382,000 deaths, according to The New York Times tracker.

New infections remain high as deaths continue to rise dramatically. About 250,000 new infections are reported daily while an average of more than 3,300 people have been dying per day due to COVID-19 over the past seven days. On Tuesday, the U.S. reached a record high with more than 4,400 deaths in a single day.

“Although this [the COVID-19 pandemic] has had some impact on his [Trump’s] election, the blow to his reputation is far from fundamental. Trump’s protests against the election results have caused him much more trouble, like a second impeachment, and he has been silenced by the U.S. social media. The different penalties show how ‘tolerant’ the U.S. system is for the malfeasance which has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths,” The Global Times editorial said.

Compared to the U.S., China has done well at combating the COVID-19 pandemic. The outbreak of the novel virus first arose in the Chinese city of Wuhan, but the country has only seen just under 98,000 infections and a little more than 4,600 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Trump and his administration have repeatedly blamed China for the pandemic.

Chinese officials were initially slow to respond to the novel virus in Wuhan. Local officials in the city attempted to cover up the outbreak, even arresting doctors who attempted to raise awareness through social media and other channels. There have been allegations that a government lab in Wuhan accidentally leaked the virus, which Chinese officials have denied. Some scientists who worked with the lab have expressed skepticism about those concerns, but a full transparent investigation has not been conducted.

The Trump administration’s response to the pandemic has been viewed by his critics as a failure. Even distribution of vaccines—which the president touted as his primary objective and achievement—has seen a slower than expected roll out, with persistent concerns about a lack of adequate supplies.

Newsweek reached out to the State Department for comment.
