Sunday’s COVID update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) includes 1,227 new cases and five new deaths.

The five new deaths increases the state’s death toll to (6,830) over the course of the pandemic. Of the total deaths, 62.5% (4,268) were residents of long-term care, including two of the latest four deaths.

Through Mar. 26, the state reported that 1,590,826 people have received at least 1 dose of the COVID-19 vaccine while 976,061 people have completed both doses of vaccine that are required for the vaccines’ maximum effect.

Hospitalization data is not updated at weekends.

Through Mar. 25, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 357, which is up from 345 reported Thursday. There were 223 people with COVID-19 admitted to hospitals in Minnesota on Mar. 6, so admissions have steadily risen the past three weeks.

Of those hospitalized through Mar. 25, 87 were in intensive care (down from 93 reported Thursday) and 270 were receiving non-ICU treatment (up from 262).

Testing and positivity rates

The 1,227 positive results in Sunday’s update were from 31,283 completed tests, creating a daily test positivity rate of 3.92%

According to Johns Hopkins University, Minnesota’s test positivity rate over the past seven days is 5.38%.

The World Health Organization recommends that a percent positive rate (total positives divided by total completed tests) of below 5% for at least two weeks is necessary to safely reopen the economy. That 5% threshold is based on total positives divided by total tests.

Coronavirus in Minnesota by the numbers

  • Total tests: 8,152,753 (up from 8,121,575)
  • People tested: 3,669,163 (up from 3,657,256)
  • People with at least 1 vaccine shot: 1,590,826 (up from 1,557,636)
  • People who have completed. vaccine series: 976,061 (up from 936,222)
  • Positive cases: 515,058 (up from 513,833)
  • Deaths: 6,830 – 375 of which are “probable*” (up from 6,825)
  • Patients no longer requiring isolation: 495,463 (up from 494,114)

* Probable deaths are patients who died after testing positive using the COVID-19 antigen test, which is thought to be less accurate than the more common PCR test.
