Indian couple slammed for 160-person plane wedding amid COVID death crisis – New York Post

A newlywed Indian couple is reportedly under police investigation after taking their celebration to an airplane to avoid COVID-19 restrictions.

Their wedding — captured in the disturbing viral video seen here — could be the latest “super spreader” event as the country’s COVID-19 death toll passes 300,000.

State government coronavirus protocols in southern India — which is currently being wracked by a horrific second wave of the virus — disallowed the couple from having more than 50 guests at their ceremony, which they had planned to hold at a hotel in the state of Tamil Nadu, the New York Times reported.

To get around the attendance cap, the lovers instead chartered a plane, which they packed with approximately 160 people — more than triple the current maximum allowed event capacity.

Footage of the midair marriage shows a packed flight full of maskless revelers crowded into seats and filling the aisles. In the clip, released by Jam Press after circulating on social media, the bride and groom stand at the front of the flight, exchanging vows as the aircraft passes over the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple.

The flight, aboard a commercial craft operated by the Indian carrier SpiceJet, took off from the Madurai International Airport on Sunday at 7 a.m., en route to the city of Bangalore, more than an hour’s flight away. Upon arrival, the newlyweds held a small reception at a hotel in Bangalore, Jam Press reported.

Many guests opted not to wear masks or maintain social distancing for the special occasion.

All guests, the outlet added, allegedly took and passed PCR coronavirus tests before boarding the flight, but police are still reportedly looking into the matter as they consider launching an investigation into the COVID-19 violations.

In a statement to the New York Times, a SpiceJet spokesperson said that the airline had informed passengers of pandemic guidelines, which include a mask mandate and a ban on onboard photography.

“The agent and the guest passengers were briefed in detail, both in writing as well as verbally, on social distancing and safety norms to be followed as per COVID guidelines both at the airport and onboard the aircraft throughout the journey,” the airline’s statement said.
