Christmas Island crabs flock to the sea once again in annual mass migration – The Washington Post

If the larvae that hatches from the deposited eggs is not eaten by hungry fish, manta rays or giant whale sharks, baby crabs are born. Often the larvae will be devoured completely, leaving no baby crustaceans at all, but experts say once or twice a decade a larger number survive, maintaining population numbers on the island.
