Long closed to most immigration, Japan looks to open up amid labor shortage – The Washington Post

Under a program that began in 2019, semiskilled workers in understaffed sectors, including manufacturing and janitorial work, had been allowed to work in Japan for up to five years, but were not allowed to bring their families. However, workers in two sectors, construction and shipbuilding, were subject to different rules that allowed them to renew their visas repeatedly and bring their families to live with them.
