MA Weather: Volatile, Dangerous Weekend Culminates In Major Storm – Patch.com

Snow, dangerous gusts, single-digit temperatures and sub-zero wind chills will mark the weekend, all before what forecasters are calling a “significant storm.”

It starts Friday, when wind gusts as strong as 60 miles per hour whip across the state, the strongest of which will be along the Cape. The blustery winds mean the potential for power outages, especially concerning because wind chills will bottom out at minus-18 in Boston, minus-22 in Worcester and minus-25 in western parts of the state.

There could also be an inch or two of snow by the end of the day, with the highest totals coming in the Cape.

“After a mild and quiet few days today and Thursday we are expecting several winter weather hazards to impact southern New England [Friday into Saturday] including snow, damaging winds, a potential flash freeze for eastern MA, and dangerous wind chills Friday night,” the National Weather Service said.

Saturday will continue to be exceptionally cold and windy, with temperatures in the single digits and low teens for most of the day couple with 20-m.p.h. winds. (If there’s any good news here it’s that it’ll be even colder, albeit less windy, in Buffalo for the Patriots-Bills playoff game.)

Even with all the preceding weather, forecasters are eyeing Sunday night into Monday. The most common forecast as of Thursday looks like snow overnight giving way to a lot of rain in the morning with powerful wind gusts. The majority of the state could miss much of the snow, but the track is far some certain on this storm, which will become clearer over the coming day or two.
