England’s players returned to their London hotel celebrating with cans of lager and dancing with their newly-won Euro 2022 trophy in joyous scenes that matched those seen around the nation.

Sarina Wiegman’s all-conquering heroes arrived at their accommodation shortly after 11pm in the midst of a well-earned victory party entering a fourth hour.

Wearing their shirts and with their medals round their necks, the Lionesses returned to a guard of honour from hotel staff, who had laid on helium football balloons at the entrance.

As they entered the hotel, Chloe Kelly was seen with an England flag around her waist, swinging a Nike shoe bag in the air. Fittingly for the woman who had finally slayed English football’s biggest dragon, the nation’s new hero was also wearing a cowboy hat emblazoned with a Cross of St George.

Rachel Daly, Jill Scott, Millie Bright and Ellen White danced with the trophy on a grass bank in the car park.

The festivities began moments after their 2-1 extra-time win over Germany when jubilant players and staff joined in with unofficial anthem Sweet Caroline. Kelly, who scored the extra-time winner at Wembley, rightly broke off mid-interview to join in saying: “This is unreal… Sweet Caroline!”

The euphoric scenes then continued at 9.15pm as the squad burst into Wiegman’s post-match press briefing singing ‘It’s Coming Home’.

And, after further celebrations in the privacy of the Wembley dressing room, England’s latest sporting heroes were pictured for the first time arriving by coach at their hotel in the capital.

The public will get their chance to salute the Lionesses themselves on Monday in a victory parade through London. Beginning at 11am, the two-hour procession is likely to see tens of thousands flood to the streets of the capital.

The celebration will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 12.40pm onwards, hosted by former England star Alex Scott, and is expected to end by 2pm.
